Comprar uma quinta/Buy a farm

Se tivesses que decidir comprar uma quinta auto-suficiente que critérios utilizarias para a escolha do local? If you have to decide to buy a self-sufficient farm in food, water and electricity terms, what criteria would you use to choose the place?

I seriously recommend it for anyone who would like a useful introduction to this group's discussion topic. You can obtain it in Portugal through Wook:

http://www.wook.pt/ficha/new-complete-book-of-self-sufficiency/a/id/359872/filter/

It is the best 101 manual/encouragement you will ever need.

"in our country's culture, where rurality is associated with misery and degradation instead of pride" - Sad to recognize, but so it is...
Thanks for the Seymour's tip - unknown to me. It could be what I need to read in my camping tour next month.

All the best,
Mário

Dear Mario,

I am the proud owner of a copy (printed out) of Fukuoka's book, whose work I discovered with fascination.

On my part I have to say the earliest and most profound influence on my recently assumed rural inclination came from John Seymour's The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It ( http://www.amazon.com/Self-Sufficient-Life-How-Live/dp/0756654505/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1 )

His view of rural living, filled with pragmatism but also with great passion presents an honest introduction to this lifestyle and ends being so much more than a book where you can learn husbandry and beer-making. He was also one of the earliest and most influential figures of the early environmentalist movement.
He presents a lot of important information for anyone looking for a farm, depending on objective.

It is always comforting to find someone like minded in this still rather eccentric ambition in our country's culture, where rurality is associated with misery and degradation instead of pride.

Dear Nuno,
It would be difficult, for us europeans, to achieve the typical paranoid mindset of our american bros ;-); God help us! Here we still take a one-month-leave-period and dare to pause much of the industries and services by summertime.
"I don't deny that there's a strong sense of empowerment..."
I see we share the same angle of "moving to the country" and allow me to refer you to a book/author, in case it's unknown to you, that inspired me and lead me to all this permacultue disposition:
The One-Straw Revolution - Masanobu Fukuoka, traduzido em várias línguas; em port. A Revolução de Uma Palha.
Inet is loaded with references and articles (I can email you a 2.7Mb .doc version widely available; let me know).

Quoting Fukuoka:
"The ultimate goal of farming, is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection- of human beings."

Fortes amplexos and cheers!

I agree with you Mario, it is incredibly pessimistic :) as are many articles in this website, that sometimes lose a bit focus on the subjects.

Personally, I'm more motivated towards self-reliance and rural living because of a sense of belonging, for health, vocational and even aesthetical reasons (why not?).

I don't deny that there's a strong sense of empowerment that comes with achieving a level of self sufficiency but I doubt that seeking mere survival is a sufficient validation of this lifestyle.

I believe there's a discussion going on in PP about this issue, but I rather focus on the pragmatical aspects the author refers such has setting up a realistic calendar for setting up your own place (without considering armageddon naturally).

Cheers!

Thanks for the input Nuno. Looks like good advice - somehow pessimistic (or not?).
Cheers!

Hi everyone,

As there is curiosity on this subject from others that (like me) don't have a rural background here is the suggestion of an interesting Campfire article with a very abbreviated but down-to-earth description on how to establish a property.

The tonic is, as usual, a bit too eschatologist for my taste but the knowledge exposed is always interesting.

Hi Nuno and Membersl,
That's an interesting issue we've been thinking about.
Me and my associate are weighting the possibilities of a smooth transition involving liquidating most of our assets for a country parcel/share of land. Meaning we are taking ownership/land sharing as an option, for the reasons you mentioned.
As said before by Jonathan Rainbow, a cooperative body well organized and legally registered can be a way to achieve a better quality of life, within permaculture ethics and principles.
Maybe Jonathan can share his experience on how to plan such cooperative to fit our desires.

Warm regards,

Mario
